Stoney Point Ojibwa, frustrated after years of government refusal to acknowledge their claim that their land at Ipperwash had been improperly expropriated, seized control of Ipperwash Provincial Park on the eastern shore of Lake Huron. A confrontation between protestors and the Ontario Provincial Police led to the shooting death of Dudley George. George's death precipitated a demand for a provincial inquiry into police handling of the incident and drew national attention to the Stoney Point claim.
