The fourth treaty in the series aimed at establishing official relations between the Canadian government and the Plains Cree of southeastern Saskatchewan. The negotiations for Treaty 4 took place in the Qu'Appelle Valley. This treaty took two years to bring to fruition, as discussion of terms continued between the lieutenant-governor of the North-West Territories, Alexander Morris, and Cree chiefs Pasquah and Piapot. The negotiations eventually concluded with the government conceding greater quantities of farm equipment and seed than had been previously granted. Trapping, as well as hunting and fishing, rights were also guaranteed to the signatories.
