During the latter part of the 1860s, tensions were increasing on the Plains between the Cree and the Blackfoot tribes due to the decline of the bison and competition for other game resources. Maskepetoon, a Cree chief who had converted to the Methodist faith and become literate, acted as a diplomat between missionaries and Native bands, as well as among Native groups. Maskepetoon attempted to forestall the breakdown of peace between the Plains tribes by entering a Blackfoot encampment with his son in 1869. Both were killed, and warfare broke out between these powerful groups.
